In Math, we connected our learning about measurement with the FIFA World Cup and soccer fields. During a class discussion, we explored the features of a soccer field and identified the different shapes that make up its design, including rectangles, circles, and semicircles. We learned that a soccer field has two long sides called lengths and two shorter sides called widths. Students also discovered that the field is symmetrical, which means one half is an exact mirror image of the other half. To extend our learning, students worked in groups to investigate three of the FIFA World Cup host countries: Canada, the United States of America (USA), and Mexico. They used their understanding of measurement and field design to make connections between mathematics and the global sporting event.
