On Tuesday 11th August, the Year 5/6 students from the Pandas and the Penguins classes caught public transport to participate in an exciting fieldwork event at the Adelaide Central Market. The focus of this trip was to create a healthy, macronutrient-filled meal to serve 4-5 people in their groups with a $25 budget.
The students independently came up with meal ideas, ingredients, and recipes, using math, science, persuasion, and problem-solving. They also focused on money, decimals, and finding the best prices to achieve the best budgeting. When they first arrived at the Adelaide Central Market, they separated into their independent groups to visit each shop and compare prices for every ingredient they needed before purchasing. In between their market purchases, students had a small break to buy their own snacks from the vibrant stalls.
Once the students finished from the markets, they returned to school where they independently cooked their meals using their own recipes. Some of the meals the students cooked included penne Napoletana, sushi, chicken schnitzel burgers, and fried rice. The Central Market excursion was a fun event, using many different skills and putting them all into action, and of course enjoying their delicious, healthy creations.
