Between the ocean and the lake, West Lakes is the hub of water sports ranging from canoeing, kayaking, snorkeling sailing and surfing. The serene lake comes to life with its water sports and activities amongst the cafes and waterfront homes. West Lakes Aquatic Centre is the perfect choice for students to learn a range of water sports and safety. Annually, the year 6 students enjoy a full day with qualified instructors alternating between ocean and lake sports. This year was no different with perfect weather to test their skills, whether it be the waves of the ocean to ride a surfboard and windsurf to the calmer water of the lake to paddle a canoe.
The aim of the day was to develop a range of knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes across the aquatic activities including the development of:
- aquatic activity skills and techniques
- water confidence and water safety
- survival in and on the water
- environmental factors
- rescue of others
- self-reliance and social skills
My favourite part was kayaking because it was the most fun. I learnt how to hold the oar correctly.
