Celebrating NAIDOC Week at Fulham Gardens Primary School was filled with events for 2 weeks. Kick starting week 9, students were introduced to NAIDOC history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s theme chosen by the National NAIDOC Committee, is Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud. The theme honours the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture – with fire a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Tuesday, we welcomed Uncle Mickey Kumatpi Marrutya O’Brien to open the celebrations with a smoking ceremony. Families of the school community came together with students to start the day with a beautiful ceremony and share in morning tea. Freshly baked scones topped with Kakadu plum, lemon myrtle, wild rosella, green ant and muntries jam. Finished with freshly whipped cream and lemon myrtle.
Wednesday and Thursday students immersed themselves in dreamtime stories and a chance to win the colouring in competition.
Tiddalick the frog:
Keeping the Fire Burning Friday, students cooked damper in the bonfire pit. Saltbush dough baked and lightly crusted to warm up on a wintery day.
Week 10 was not slowing down with an education on Aboriginal symbols. Boomerang decorating, rock painting and badge making to test out newly learned designs and symbols to wear Loud & Proud!
To top off the week, yummy donuts!
And freshly baked Lemon Myrtle Biscuits for parents at this morning’s assembly.
