The last week of term 3, the Bears and Sloths classes ran the $20 Boss Market Day. Throughout the term, students learnt about enterprise skills and business in their HASS lessons. This learning was integrated into their English, Math and Technology lessons to expand their knowledge and understanding of building a business model. Each student was allocated $20 to start the journey of creating, launching, and operating a business. The goal was to make a profit and pay back a $1 legacy, which is like interest in the real world.

The program was divided into 5 parts:

Step 1: Enterprise Skills – learning about what these are and how we use them in business.

Step 2: Coming up with ideas – learning about products and services, conducting surveys, and creating a business model.

Step 3: Budgeting – learning about best buys, discounts, profit, loss, and sale price. Students included persuasive letters to local business to ask for donations.

Step 4: Designing a marketing campaign – learning advertising – creating posters, flyers, websites, business cards and commercials. They also wrote a persuasive pitch to lure in their buyers!

Step 5: Hosting a market day stall – including risk assessment, packaging, signage, and decoration.

Market Day was a huge success! Students making $675.65 in profit.

Half of the profit will go towards this year’s graduation, and the other half for next years.

CONGRATULATIONS to all students involved!

We asked some of the students about the $20 Boss program, and this is what they had to say

“The best part of the program was Seeing our business come together on the day and actually selling our own products that we made” – Emma B

“I liked creating my website and advertisements the most”- Reno

“The best part of the $20 Boss program, personally for me, was getting our stalls ready. We never knew how tiring selling would be, but preparing? That was really fun! We got to make the Fruity Milk together and put posters up on the wall and our stalls.” – Maia

“The top 3 enterprise skills we used on Market Day was teamwork, communication and problem solving” – Almira

“I used the enterprise skill Creativity and Innovation when I was making the poster. I was making sure that they were vibrant, eye catching and easy to read. Other than those restrictions, I was creative when making all the posters for our stall”- Tasman
