During Week 10 of term 3, year 5/6 students ran a $20 Boss Market Day. Students learnt about enterprise skills and business in their HASS lessons. This learning was integrated into their English, Math and Technology lessons to expand their knowledge and understanding of building a business model. Each student was allocated $20 to start the journey of creating, launching, and operating a business. The goal was to make a profit and pay back a $1 legacy, which is like interest in the real world.

The program was divided into 5 parts:

Step 1: Enterprise Skills – learning about what these are and how we use them in business.

Step 2: Coming up with ideas – learning about products and services, conducting surveys and creating a business model.

Step 3: Budgeting – learning about best buys, discounts, profit, loss and sale price. Students included persuasive letters to local business to ask for donations.

Step 4: Designing a marketing campaign – learning about the purple cow theory and creating flyers, websites, business cards and videos.

Step 5: Hosting a market day stall – including risk assessment, packaging, signage and decoration.

Market Day was a huge success! Students making $1001.15 in profit.

A portion of this profit will go towards this year’s graduation. Remaining profits will be put towards an area of improvement in our school.

A huge congratulations to all students involved!

We asked students, what was the best part of the $20 boss program?

I liked finding how much money you earned all together as a team. Also, definitely working with my teammates and how great we work together. Seeing people walk away and then saying, “that was delicious!”  – Sophia

The best part of $20 Boss was making the food, decorating it, and making the stall look pretty. I also think that making money, and strengthening our enterprise skills were one of the best parts too.” – Anke

I enjoyed making posters on Canva, designing is something that is fun and shows creativity.” – Saga

Personally, I think the best part was marketing. It was so much fun, and I got to experience something new.” – Sienna

We used problem solving on the day when things didn’t go our way. For example, one of games broke and we had to try and fix it before trading started.” – Simune

Thank you to our school community, parents, friends and visitors who came along to support the Market Day event at FGPS. A special thank you and mention to Chatime Henley Beach, Kmart West Lakes, Drakes Findon and Woolworth’s Fulham Gardens for their generous donations.
